Prior to leaving, there is a Q.&A. session, attendence is required so last minute road notes can be shared. The session shown was at Watson Lake, we had a pot luck in the tent followed by this meeting. Tomorrow for instance, we are advised that we will run 147 miles between fuel stations at one point. Our range is about 300 miles, since about 25% of the expected stations are closed I pay strict attention to these details.
We’ve come to realize that our whole trip through these mountains is a series of 10 miles up and 10 miles down, cross a bridge and go up another 10 mile. Repeat as required. In doing so the vista are constantly changing and there is very little boredom, excitement is provided buy the sighting of critters or huge tandem fuel or log trucks coming at us from around a peaceful bend. Oh – Shit is an acceptable exclamation when this happens. Picture? I don’t think so as I am a bit busy at the moment!
We arrived in White Horse after an uneventful 265 mile tow.Prior to going to the campground I went to a small RV repair shop. I explained my symptoms and asked if I could make an appointment. He was very busy but wanted to take a look because the verbiage I gave him described an unusual occurrence. It should be an open fuse or dirty battery contact. He had a very nifty continuity tester that also read voltage. In about 10 minutes he found this open fuse. 20 minutes later we wired around it {it is redundant to a 50 amp circuit breaker} and we were back on the road! This fuse had been installed as a ‘Belt and Suspenders’ by my Solar fellow. I will have source one from a heavy truck dealer in Alaska.
We toured the S.S. Klondike, a restored river stern wheeler that was one of hundreds that plied these river during the gold rush at the turn of the century. It burned 1 cord of wood per hour when underway. Look at the size of the typical Wood used!
Later we went to a Rib House for a nice dinner. Our Wagon Master seems to be enjoying his pie here. I had Smoked Prime Rib and S.W.M.B.O. had Alaskan halibut.
The entertainment consisted of a mild burlesque show that was entertaining. There were 8 actors and they all seemed to play several instrument. I kind of favored the Saw Band, the Gal playing the base seemed to have a rubber face which she contorted to the music.
On Sunday we will be traveling to Dawson City, 334 more miles of challenging roads. I’m going to give Anne-Marie the camera with instructions to fire it when I shout “Oh-Shit”. Maybe you will get to see one of these log trucks up close and personal.
In the mean time, make sure you use all the tools in your tool box to your betterment and that of your fellow man.
