Our road to Dawson City was 330 miles long. Most of it is ‘Chip Sealed’ which is fancy names for tar and pea stone. Overcast and raining most of the drive, We saw no critters, I’m sure they saw us. We see a dozen of these tandem log (or Fuel) trucks each hour. This picture taken in the rain doesn't do justice to the plum of dust and small stones the throw off.
The map below is accurate where we ate lunch. Dawson is 125 west of the arrow point. The Yukon is a territory, the difference between a Territory and a Province is population. Try this; The Yukon has 1 telephone area code!
When we arrive we have to jack our rig up with 12 ton bottle jacks which add 1/2 hour to the process, we repeat the process the remount when leaving. Our parts are waiting in Fairbanks, AK.
Our Tour Guides push us. Following our arrival we had a 1/2 hour lecture on the area’s history and than we were walked about 1/4 mile to Diamond Gertties Burlesque House and Casino. Fellow Adventurer Charlie Prout was allowed to ;dance’ with the girls. He was rewarded with her garter which he seemed to enjoy.
In a town of dirt street and planked side walks, look what we found to be the biggest and by far best building in town. Across the street from a bawdy house, what a choice to be made 110 years ago!
Tomorrow, A tour of the Town!
I hope you are enjoying it. This brings back many memories for me. My folks got to enjoy Diamond Gerties while I walked around with Jason & Eric. We took the ferry across the Yukon River and drove into Alaska on the Top of the World Highway. Safe travels. Gail Evarts
