Serendipity means a "happy accident" or "pleasant surprise"; specifically, the accident of finding something good or useful while not specifically searching for it. The word has been voted one of the ten English words hardest to translate in June 2004 by a British translation company.
So, where and how do we find Serendipity? We don’t, it finds us! How about as in a 1915 Model T that is circumambulating the world supporting a charity that builds schools for the world’s children. This is the route they are traveling 2012-2015.
Here I am, getting my 1st ride in a 1915 Model T, my Driver is Dirk Regter. As from the Summer of 2012 until the end of 2015 Dirk en Trudy
Regter from the Netherlands will be making a journey in their 1915 Model T-Ford, visiting over 50 countries covering all the continents of the
world. Click on this link to view the organizations video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=14oiB1kbAIA
They are followed on their 40mph trek by a support vehicle staffed by volunteers who serve about 3 months.
Looking at the Web Site http://www.tfordworldtour.org/ you will find more information than I can give you in one blog entry.
The Model T is very original with exceptions to improve safety and reliability in desert conditions. It has modern lighting system coupled with a modern alternator. The electric fan mounted on the front along with an aftermarket water pump {not factory equipment in 1915} handles cooling. The T has a 2 speed rear end from a like period truck allowing 40mph cruising speed.
We hosted a campfire with adult beverages and a few local camping neighbors who were wanting to hear the story.
Being Dutch it was inevitable that stories would be told. Dirk related the story of the stolen Dutch Bicycles. It seem that during the occupation, the Germans stole every bicycle they could find. It seem that the German soldiers had discovered that it was better to ride in retreat from the Allies than to walk. To this day when a German soccer team goes to The Netherlands, it will be greeted with a Bronx Cheer of, “ Give us Back our Bicycles! “ More info to be found here.
The temperatures dive into the 40’s at night here so the party broke up at 10:00 which is very late for us. We woke up at 9:00only to discover that our new friends had already packed up and left. We wish them God Speed on their journey and continued success on their mission to help the children of the world.
