Great Falls, MT to Hills Spring, AL. was about 200 miles of very nice 2 lane going across the congested border and 60mph cruising on 2 lane. One of our preparation was to put screening over the beast’s headlights. Later I will put ‘bubble pack’ on the fog lights to protect them.
Canola is a big cash crop out here, along with alfalfa which supports the beef feed lots here.
We are staying 2 days at The Great Canadian Campground owned by the Conklin Family. In addition to the 100 site campground this 3 generation family owns and runs Great Canadian Barn Dance Hall. They served up a fine buffet dinner featuring pot roast and roasted chicken with fresh vegetables as sides.
This was followed up by a program held in the barn which was given by all 3 generations. They played guitars, Cordavox, violin, and keyboards. Lot’s of 50’s and 60’s music rocked the hall for 2 hours.
On Tuesday we went to tour Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump.
On this site the Indian herded buffalo over the cliff’s edge in an annual hunt which allowed then to ‘harvest’ several hundred buffalo for their winter needs. This hunt was done in the cold days of fall after the animals had been fattened by foraging during the summer months.
We were given a demonstration of native music and dancing‘
We next toured the Remington Carriage Center, reputed to be the largest collection in the world dedicated to horse drawn vehicles . Containing about 300 buggy's, sleighs and a work shop that rebuilds and restores these items, the tour took 3 hours. We also had a 20 minute ride around the Museum’s Gardens.
Tomorrow we are on to Calgary where we will start a very busy 4 day regiment of 10 hour days with regards to the Calgary Stampede and it’s associated activities.
On the 4th of July, to celebrate our Grand Daughter Amelia’s Birthday, we had a BBQ at the end of the day.
