2 Hour River Raft Trip 2013

DSCN3530

The morning started at 7:15 when we started suiting up at the raft companies headquarters.  It’s 60°+ and overcast.  Driving over the ‘Windy Bridge’ the Nenana River was gray and turbulent.  Not inviting at all!  Water Temperature:  36°

Putting on dry suits is a chore, old bones and joints are not as limber as in the folks showing how to do this.

Below is a montage of our morning, thanks to Charlie Parfitt who sent me his photos to meld into mine.

I hope you can see that as the morning progressed, the sun came out and gave us blistering mid-60’s temperatures.  The ‘Dry Suits’ were very effective at keeping us dry, we were drenched several times which cannot be shown as I needed to protect the evidence contained in my camera.

At the completion of the tour, removing the Dry Suit was best described by our DSCN3518Guide as a rebirthing process.  It is now 11:00 and we are all very hungry as we had no breakfast or coffee (Hint it’s a diuretic, not good in a dry suit!)

We retired to The Alaska Bake, where we feasted with fried Halibut, the best I’ve ever eaten.  After a good meal and 2 glasses of Alaska Amber, I declared a 2 hour nap time.

The day was still young, at 7:15 we went to the McKenzie Dinner Theater where we enjoyed a festive dinner served by the cast of the show.  The dinner was most excellent consisting of family style Salmon and wonderful fall off the bone Pork Ribs.  Even the side dishes of red potatoes, Spicy Baked Beans, fresh baked biscuits and Peppered Corn were over the top.

The show was musical comedy with lots of audience participation.

We arrived home at 11:30, still light out.  At about 12:30 the wind began to blow HARD!  Our unit rocked back and forth like a honeymoon suite in Las Vegas.  The next day (Saturday) was to have been a day of R&R, I stayed busy all morning helping to repair wind damage.  Thankfully not ours.
